A Regional Court Blocks WhatsApp – (Open Proxy)
WhatsApp has been on these pages several times recently increasing the levels of privacy it offers (see WhatsApp Privacy) and elsewhere (see Open Proxy). Well in Brazil the Courts at least are less than pleased. The Regional Judge has blocked WhatsApp as they are refusing to hand over private data relating to a drug trafficking case.
The net effect is of course “Yet again millions of innocent Brazilians are being punished because a court wants WhatsApp to turn over information we repeatedly said we don’t have,” per the messaging services CEO Jan Koum stated. He pointed out the chats are not kept on their servers – it would seem the Judge has misunderstood how things work.
Interesting as the Brazilian Government is currently reviewing privacy laws and also that a single Regional Judge has that much power – some suggest something close to one hundred million Brazilians use the app.Wiki Brazil Courts
